Purpose of the Position
The Support Worker will provide physical, emotional and social support to beneficiaries who require care while continuing to live in their own homes.
An important part of the position is helping older persons maintain their dignity and independence while ensuring that their home environment remains clean, safe and comfortable.
Minimum Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities

The caregiver may also escort beneficiaries who require transportation to medical appointments or other essential appointments.
Medication and Basic Healthcare Support
The position also includes certain health-related support duties performed according to instructions from healthcare professionals.
The caregiver may be required to:
- Keep accurate medication administration records
- Administer prescribed medication when required and directed
- Monitor and record possible medication side effects
- Provide basic wound care as prescribed by a doctor or nurse
- Administer first aid
- Change dressings when necessary
- Report signs of illness or other health concerns to the nurse
Caregivers must accurately record relevant information and communicate changes in a beneficiary’s condition to the appropriate healthcare professionals.
Working With Older Persons
Candidates should be able to treat older people with kindness, patience, sensitivity and respect, taking into consideration each person’s condition and level of understanding.
The Support Worker may work with registered nurses, social workers, social auxiliary workers and the Programme Coordinator.
Any concerns involving the beneficiary, household equipment or other aspects of the home environment should be reported to the appropriate professional.
Housekeeping Responsibilities
Home-based care extends beyond personal assistance.
Support Workers are expected to help maintain a safe and hygienic living environment through duties such as cleaning, doing laundry and keeping the beneficiary’s home tidy.
Candidates should therefore understand that housekeeping forms part of this caregiver position.
Skills Needed
