About the Sea Harvest Reach Truck Driver Position

The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and accurate movement of palletised fish within Sea Harvest’s cold storage operation.

The role involves operating a reach truck to locate, retrieve, stack and move frozen products while ensuring that stock movements are properly scanned and recorded.

The Reach Truck Driver will also support stock counts and inventory control to help ensure the company’s physical stock matches its inventory records.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 12 / Matric
  • Valid Reach Truck Operator Licence/Certificate
  • At least 2 years’ experience operating a reach truck
  • Experience within a cold storage, warehouse or food-manufacturing environment

A forklift licence is advantageous.

Applicants should make sure their CV clearly states their reach truck experience and licence or certificate.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. Preparing Orders for Dispatch and Inbound Stock

The Reach Truck Driver will receive orders from a supervisor and locate the required stock within the cold store.

Responsibilities include:

  • Receiving required orders from the supervisor
  • Locating pallets within the cold store
  • Scanning orders out correctly
  • Feeding orders to the Hyster driver
  • Receiving inbound stock from the Hyster driver
  • Scanning incoming orders
  • Storing pallets accurately in designated locations

Accuracy is important because incorrect pallet selection or storage can affect dispatch and inventory records.

2. Operating the Reach Truck

The successful candidate will operate a reach truck throughout designated cold-store areas.

This includes:

  • Loading products
  • Unloading products
  • Transporting pallets
  • Stacking frozen products
  • Retrieving stock
  • Moving products between production areas
  • Moving stock to and from blast freezers
  • Moving stock through holding freezers
  • Supplying dispatch areas

The employee must operate the equipment safely and according to company procedures.

Stock Rotation and FIFO

The Reach Truck Driver must maintain stock rotation according to FIFO principles.

FIFO means First In, First Out.

In practical terms, older stock should generally be moved or dispatched before newer stock where applicable. This is particularly important in food-storage environments where product age and cold-chain management must be carefully controlled.

Knowledge of FIFO principles is therefore one of the competencies Sea Harvest expects applicants to have.

Inventory and Stock Control

This job also includes inventory responsibilities.

The successful candidate will assist with:

  • Daily stock counts
  • Cycle counts
  • Annual stock takes
  • Checking product quantities
  • Verifying pallet labels
  • Confirming storage locations
  • Reporting stock discrepancies
  • Identifying damaged products
  • Reporting incorrect stock allocations
  • Completing stock-movement documentation accurately

Candidates with previous warehouse stock-control experience should clearly include this on their CV.

Reach Truck Safety Responsibilities

Operating material-handling equipment safely is a major part of the position.

Before beginning a shift, the Reach Truck Driver will be expected to conduct an inspection of the equipment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Completing pre-shift reach truck inspections
  • Completing equipment checklists
  • Reporting mechanical defects
  • Reporting equipment damage
  • Identifying and reporting safety hazards
  • Following company operating procedures
  • Maintaining safe pallet configurations
  • Ensuring safe stacking heights
  • Maintaining good housekeeping standards

Applicants should be comfortable working in a structured environment where safety procedures must be followed consistently.

Working in a Cold Store Environment

Candidates should pay particular attention to the working environment before applying.

This position operates within Sea Harvest’s Cold Stores department and involves handling frozen products.

Applicants should therefore understand that this is not a standard office or retail warehouse position. The successful candidate will need to work effectively in a cold-storage environment while maintaining productivity, accuracy and safety.

Skills and Competencies

Sea Harvest is looking for candidates with knowledge and ability in:

  • Reach truck operation
  • Reach truck manoeuvring
  • Loading and unloading pallets
  • Safe pallet stacking
  • Retrieving pallets
  • Warehouse operations
  • Cold-store operations
  • Inventory control
  • Stock management
  • Equipment inspections
  • Fault reporting
  • FIFO stock rotation
  • Food-safety requirements
  • Cold-chain requirements
  • Operational documentation

Accuracy and safety are particularly important because the employee will be moving and recording inventory.
